EUROPEAN COUNCIL DECISION (EU) 2024/1862

of 28 June 2024

proposing to the European Parliament a candidate for President of the Commission

THE EUROPEAN COUNCIL,
Having regard to the Treaty on European Union, and in particular Article 17(7) thereof,
Whereas:
(1) Article 17(7) of the Treaty on European Union provides that, taking into account the elections to the European Parliament and after having held the appropriate consultations, the European Council proposes to the European Parliament a candidate for President of the European Commission.
(2) The elections to the European Parliament were held between 6 and 9 June 2024, in accordance with Article 11(2), first subparagraph, of the Act concerning the election of the members of the European Parliament by direct universal suffrage (1).
(3) In accordance with Declaration No 11 annexed to the Final Act of the Intergovernmental Conference which adopted the Treaty of Lisbon (2), representatives of the European Parliament and of the European Council conducted the necessary consultations.
(4) A candidate for President of the Commission should therefore be proposed to the European Parliament,
HAS ADOPTED THIS DECISION:

Article 1

Ms Ursula VON DER LEYEN is hereby proposed to the European Parliament as candidate for President of the Commission.

Article 2

This Decision shall be forwarded to the European Parliament.

Article 3

This Decision shall enter into force on the date of its adoption. It shall be published in the
Official Journal of the European Union
